What to Read When You’re…

Discouraged

  • Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
  • Psalm 42:11 – “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

Anxious

  • Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • Matthew 6:25-34 – “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life… Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
  • 1 Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
  • Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Depressed

  • Psalm 23 – “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”
  • Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
  • Romans 8:38-39 – “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Lamentations 3:22-23 – “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Insecure

  • Psalm 139:13-14 – “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
  • Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
  • Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
  • 1 John 3:1 – “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

Angry

  • Ephesians 4:26-27 – “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”
  • Proverbs 15:1 – “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
  • James 1:19-20 – “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
  • Psalm 4:4 – “Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.”

Feel Guilty

  • Romans 8:1 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
  • 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
  • Psalm 103:12 – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
  • Micah 7:18-19 – “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

Feel Alone

  • Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
  • Psalm 68:6 – “God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing.”
  • Matthew 28:20 – “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
  • Hebrews 13:5 – “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Overwhelmed

  • Psalm 61:2 – “From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
  • Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
  • Exodus 14:14 – “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
  • Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
